toll

my heart was lulled by a simple glance
of recognition.
She hadn’t aged –
thank god she hadn’t aged,

averted
as
she shook her head.
Her soft voice, “I have to go
again.”
At peace, I watched her take every step.
And as she returned to the future,
I returned to the past.
